Why use lycra in a lehenga?
Lycra stretches in every direction and returns to shape, so the skirt can sit close at the waist and hip without a stiff fastening and it gives when you move. That makes it noticeably easier to wear through a long evening than a fully structured woven fabric.
Does cord embroidery work on a stretch fabric?
It does, but the embroidered areas lose their stretch because the couched cord holds the fabric firm along its line. That is why cord work on a lycra base is usually placed in defined panels or borders rather than spread across the whole garment, keeping give where it matters.
Is a lycra lehenga less formal than silk?
It reads differently rather than less formally. Lycra has a smooth, slightly matte surface without the natural sheen of silk, so the impression is more contemporary. With cord embroidery over it, the set still carries enough worked detail for a sangeet or an evening reception.
Does lycra crease in transit?
Far less than woven silk or taffeta. Lycra recovers its shape after being folded, so it comes out of a bag without the sharp fold lines a crisp fabric holds. That makes it a practical choice if you are travelling to a function rather than dressing at home.
