What is a position print?
A position print is printed to a set placement on the cloth rather than repeating endlessly across it. The motifs are laid out for where they will fall on the finished drape, so the design resolves along the pallu and the border instead of being cut through at the edges.
What does self jaquard mean?
The pattern is woven in the same colour as the ground rather than a contrasting one. Because there is no colour difference, the motif is read entirely through texture and the shadows it casts, which gives the cloth depth without introducing a second shade.
What is Kanjivaram silk?
Kanjivaram refers to the silk weaving tradition of Kanchipuram in Tamil Nadu, associated with substantial, closely woven cloth that carries real weight. This saree is described as kanjivaram self jaquard silk on its own specification, with the pattern woven into the ground.
Can a printed saree also be embroidered?
Yes, and this one is. The specification records position print with embroidery and handwork, meaning the print goes down first and stitched work is applied over it. Layering the two lets the embroidery pick out and reinforce specific parts of the printed design.
Is the blouse the same fabric as the saree?
No. The saree is kanjivaram self jaquard silk while the blouse piece is pure satin silk, supplied unstitched at 0.80 metre. A plain satin blouse gives a quieter surface against a woven and printed drape rather than competing with it.
