Why does work show better on a navy ground?
Because a dark ground gives maximum contrast. Beads and sequins both rely on reflected light, and against navy that reflection reads clearly, whereas on a pale ground the same work can disappear into the fabric. That is why heavier embroidery is usually placed on darker cloth.
