What is leharia?
Leharia is a Rajasthani pattern of diagonal waves or stripes, traditionally made by rolling the cloth and tying it before dyeing so the resist lines run at an angle. On this saree the pattern is printed as a shaded leharia, with the colour graduating along the diagonal.
How does a diagonal print work with pleats?
It creates a criss-cross rhythm. Vertical pleats running down the front of the drape against a diagonal leharia line produce a pattern neither element gives on its own, which is why leharia has stayed popular on sarees long after other resist patterns faded.
What is japan crepe?
It is the blouse fabric recorded for this saree. Crepe has a fine, matte crinkled surface and a fluid fall, so it sits softly against the skin and contrasts with the sheen of the satin saree. The blouse is stitched to 38 inch with margin to 42 inch.
Is beige too plain for a function?
It is restrained rather than plain, which is exactly why it stands out in a room full of reds and golds. The shaded leharia print, the two tone weave and the beads embroidery all add movement, so the saree carries detail without carrying loud colour.
