What is applique work?
Shapes cut from a second fabric and stitched onto the base cloth, so each motif is a piece of material rather than a mass of thread. It gives a flat, graphic look with a defined edge, and it covers larger areas than embroidery could at the same weight.
How is applique different from embroidery?
Embroidery builds a motif out of stitches, while applique cuts it from fabric and attaches it. Applique therefore reads as bold, flat shapes with clean edges, where embroidery reads as raised texture. The two are often combined, with stitching used to secure and outline the applied pieces.
Why does applique show well on yellow?
A pale, bright ground gives strong contrast at the edge of every applied shape, and edge definition is exactly what the technique depends on. On a dark or busy base the same shapes lose their outline and the work reads as texture rather than as distinct motifs.
What do I do with the unstitched blouse?
It goes to a tailor to be cut and stitched to your own measurements, which takes a few days but produces a better fit than a ready blouse in a standard size. A plain finish is usually best here so the applied work on the drape stays the focus.
