What does woven silk mean on a saree?
The design is built into the cloth on the loom rather than printed onto the surface afterwards. It is therefore part of the fabric itself, visible from both faces, and formed by threads crossing differently rather than by ink or dye applied to one side.
Is a woven design more durable than a printed one?
It generally lasts better. A woven pattern cannot rub off, fade unevenly or crack the way a printed surface eventually can, because it is structural rather than applied. That is a large part of why woven sarees have traditionally been treated as the more lasting purchase.
Why does silk suit a woven design?
Because the fibre has a natural sheen. A woven pattern shows through changes in brightness as much as through changes in colour, and silk reflects light along the threads, so the design reads clearly as the drape moves. On a matte fabric the same weave shows far less.
What blouse suits a woven silk drape?
A plain one, so the weave stays the focus. A worked or printed blouse over a woven pattern gives the eye two things to read at once, which crowds the outfit. Matching the blouse to the saree, or taking a deep tonal shade, works best here.
