Does free size work if I am tall?
It does, because the fit is made in the pleating. A taller wearer takes fewer or shallower pleats and tucks a little lower, which puts more of the length into the fall of the drape. The petticoat then decides exactly where the saree ends at the ankle.
How does pleating change the fit for a shorter wearer?
Deeper pleats absorb more of the length and a higher tuck lifts the whole drape, so the saree does not pool at the floor. Chiffon suits this well because it gathers without adding bulk at the waist, which a stiffer fabric would do at the same pleat depth.
Does the petticoat length matter?
It matters more than most people expect. The petticoat sets the hem of the drape, so a petticoat that is too long makes the saree drag and one that is too short leaves it hanging above the ankle. Buying it to your own height, with your usual footwear, solves both.
Is chiffon easy to pleat by hand?
Reasonably, once you accept that the folds will be soft rather than sharp. The fabric gathers without bulk, which helps at the waist, but it slips against itself, so hold the pleats together and pin them before tucking rather than tucking them one at a time.
