Is chiffon a good fabric for a first saree?
It is among the easier places to start. It weighs almost nothing, so you are not managing a heavy drape for hours, and a busy print hides uneven pleats and small errors that would show on a plain silk. The one demand it makes is a few extra pins.
Why does a printed saree hide draping mistakes?
Pattern breaks up the shadows and lines that make an uneven pleat or an off-centre fall visible. On plain cloth every irregularity reads clearly against a flat expanse of colour. On a busy print the eye follows the pattern instead and simply does not register the difference.
How many pins does a beginner need?
Three placements cover most situations: one holding the pleats together at the waist before tucking, one securing the pallu at the shoulder of the blouse, and one at the fall. Chiffon slips more than a firmer weave, so those are more necessary here than optional.
What should I look for when buying a first saree?
Low weight, a forgiving print and a price that makes a mistake affordable. All three point towards a light printed drape rather than a heavy worked one. Once you know what suits you and how you like to drape, the heavier and plainer options become much easier to judge.
