Why does water leave a mark on silk?
Water disturbs the way silk fibres lie rather than staining them, and as it dries the disturbed area reflects light differently from the cloth around it. That is what produces a visible ring. It is a physical mark rather than a chemical one, which is why it can often be lifted.
What should I do if I spill something on a silk saree?
Blot immediately with a dry cloth, pressing rather than rubbing, and resist the urge to add water to spread the mark out. That usually turns a small ring into a large one. For oil marks from food, take the saree to a dry cleaner and point out the exact spot.
Can perfume damage a silk saree?
It can. Perfume and deodorant both contain alcohol, which is capable of stripping dye from silk and leaving a pale patch. Applying them before you dress and letting them dry completely takes an extra minute and avoids a mark that cannot easily be repaired.
Should I attempt stain removal at home?
For a water mark, blotting and letting it dry naturally is worth trying. For anything oil-based or coloured, a dry cleaner is the safer route. Home stain removers are formulated for cotton and can bleach silk unpredictably, turning a small mark into a permanent one.
