How should I pack a raw silk saree for travel?
Laid out lengthwise and rolled loosely around a tube of tissue or a spare cloth, it travels without picking up hard creases and takes no more space in a bag than folding would. Folding flat is what produces lines across the drape.
How do I remove creases from raw silk?
Press from the reverse side at a moderate heat, with a cotton cloth between the iron and the silk. Direct high heat glazes silk, leaving shiny patches that cannot be reversed. Steam held slightly away from the fabric also relaxes creases without touching it at all.
Does the textured surface hide creases?
It helps considerably. Slubs and weave irregularity break up the shadows that make a crease visible, so light creasing is far less obvious on raw silk than on a smooth, flat cloth of the same colour. Hard folds still show, which is why rolling is worth the trouble.
Why does raw silk crease more than georgette?
The same stiffness that lets it pleat sharply also makes it hold an unintended fold. Georgette is woven from hard-twisted yarn with natural spring, so it recovers from creasing on its own. Raw silk has body rather than spring, and body remembers where it was bent.
