Why should silk never be stored in plastic?
Plastic traps humidity against the fibre, and silk is a protein that reacts badly to sustained moisture. In an Indian monsoon that produces mildew spotting which cannot be removed. Wrapping the saree in cotton or muslin lets it breathe while still keeping dust off it.
How often should a silk saree be refolded?
Every few months, along a different line each time. A crease held in the same place for years gradually weakens the fibres along it, which is why old silk sarees tend to split at a fold rather than in open cloth. Refolding distributes that stress.
Does light damage silk?
Over time, yes. Prolonged exposure weakens the fibre itself as well as fading the dye, so a silk saree kept on an open rail near a window will deteriorate faster than one in a cupboard. It is one of the easiest forms of damage to prevent.
Is raw silk more or less delicate than smooth silk?
Raw silk is generally more robust in handling, because the retained gum stiffens the fibre and the textured surface hides minor marks better. It shares silk's underlying sensitivities to moisture, light and prolonged creasing, so the storage advice is the same for both.
