Why do pleats hold better in raw silk?
The natural gum retained in raw silk stiffens the yarn and gives the cloth body. Pleats therefore fold sharply and stack evenly rather than fanning apart the way they do in a fluid fabric, and they hold their line at the waist without needing much pinning.
How should the pallu be arranged on a raw silk saree?
Pleated and pinned flat generally looks better than loose. Raw silk keeps a defined edge rather than collapsing softly, so a loose fall reads stiff and slightly awkward, while a pleated one uses that same structure to produce clean vertical lines down the back.
Does a structured saree need a particular petticoat?
A well-fitted one, yes. A soft fabric drapes over a loose waistband and hides it. Raw silk will not do that: it holds its own shape, so any slack at the waist shows as bulk in the pleats. A firm, correctly sized cotton petticoat solves it.
Is raw silk harder to drape than georgette?
Different rather than harder. Georgette is forgiving because it flows around imprecision. Raw silk demands more accuracy in the pleating, but it rewards it, since the pleats then stay exactly as you set them for the whole event without slipping or needing adjustment.
