What is raw silk?
Raw silk is silk that has kept its natural gum, called sericin, rather than having it boiled away in the degumming process most silks go through. The retained gum stiffens the yarn and dulls the surface, which is why raw silk feels dry and looks matt rather than lustrous.
How does raw silk feel compared with smooth silk?
Dry and slightly rough rather than cool and slippery. Running a hand across raw silk you feel texture and a faint resistance; smooth degummed silk slides under the fingers. That difference comes entirely from the natural gum that raw silk retains in its fibre.
Does raw silk hold a pleat well?
Better than almost any other silk. The retained gum gives the yarn stiffness and the cloth body, so pleats stay crisp and defined where a smooth silk would let them slide apart. The trade-off is that raw silk makes a structured drape rather than a flowing one.
Why does red look different in raw silk?
Because the surface is matt rather than lustrous. A shiny silk reflects light back at you and makes red look bright and declarative. Raw silk absorbs more of that light, so the same red reads deeper, quieter and more textured, which many people find easier to wear.
