What is hand printing?
It covers any method where the design is applied by hand rather than by machine, most often with carved wooden blocks dipped in dye and stamped onto the cloth section by section. Alignment is judged by eye, which is what gives hand-printed fabric its particular character.
Will my piece look exactly like the photograph?
Close, but hand-printed cloth genuinely varies between pieces. A motif may sit slightly differently, or the dye may have taken a little more heavily in one area. These are marks of the process rather than faults, and they are part of what distinguishes hand work from machine printing.
Are the small irregularities in the print defects?
No. A motif slightly out of line with its neighbour, a patch of deeper colour, a faint join where two block impressions meet: all of these come from a person aligning each impression by eye. Machine printing eliminates them, and with them the character of the process.
Why does hand printing suit cotton?
Cotton absorbs dye readily and deeply, so a hand-printed impression sinks into the fibre rather than sitting on top of it. That gives the colour a soft, slightly uneven depth. A synthetic surface holds ink more evenly but with less of that absorbed, lived-in quality.
