What is an applique flower?
It is a flower shape cut from a separate piece of fabric and stitched onto the base cloth, so it stands as a solid form with its own outline and a slight lift off the ground. Against an open mono net that gives a strong contrast of solid against transparent.
Why does this saree combine satin silk with net?
The two fabrics behave in opposite ways and are used for that contrast. Metallic lustrous satin silk is solid, weighty and highly reflective, while mono net is open, airy and structural, so the drape moves between a dense shining surface and a transparent one.
How is cutdana different from ordinary beads?
Cutdana are cut with flat faceted sides instead of a smooth round surface, so each face refracts light in a sharp point. Plain beads return a softer rounded highlight by comparison. Using both means the surface reads at two different intensities as you move.
Is a lining needed with this saree?
Yes, wherever the mono net sections fall. Net is an open mesh and stays sheer between the applique flowers and beadwork, so a lining or a well-matched petticoat is part of wearing it. Arrange that before the function rather than on the day.
Does the blouse contain net as well?
No. The blouse is cut from metallic lustrous satin alone, without the mono net, so it is the solid half of the pairing. That makes it more opaque than the net sections of the saree and simpler to line if you choose to add one.
