What is gota patti?
A traditional Indian appliqué craft in which narrow metallic ribbon is folded, cut and stitched into motifs, most often flowers and leaves. It is used on clothing and, as here, on jewellery. Artificial fashion jewellery; not made of solid gold; the ribbon is metallic-look, not precious metal.
Is gota patti jewellery heavy?
No, and that is its main practical advantage. Because the motifs are built from ribbon rather than cast metal, the piece sits light on the neck through a long function, which matters at a puja or a daytime event where a heavy necklace becomes uncomfortable after an hour.
How do I care for a gota patti piece?
More gently than metal. Keep it completely dry, never wear it in the rain, keep perfume and spray off the ribbon, and store it flat in a box rather than crushed in a drawer. Ribbon work creases and cannot be reshaped the way metal can.
What should I wear it with?
A plain saree, a cotton or chanderi suit, or anything where the outfit is not already carrying a heavy print. Red florets read traditional, so this suits a puja, a festival at home or a daytime family function better than an evening party.
