What kind of silk is Habotai?
Habotai is a fine plain-weave silk, smooth and light, with an even low sheen rather than a mirror finish. It is one of the softer silk constructions, which is why it falls close to the body and gives narrow pleats instead of standing away from the frame.
Does this saree need a heavy petticoat to hold its shape?
Habotai is a fluid, light fabric that follows the line underneath it, so a well-fitted petticoat in a matching or dark shade makes a visible difference to how the drape sits. A stiff or bulky petticoat is not needed and would work against the fall.
What does handwork mean on this saree?
Handwork means the sequin and embellishment elements are placed and fixed individually by hand rather than run through an embroidery machine. Density and placement follow the design, so the work sits where the pattern calls for it instead of repeating on a fixed grid.
Is the blouse the same fabric as the saree?
No. The saree is Habotai silk and the blouse is stitched in satin silk, which carries more sheen and a little more weight. It is supplied ready-stitched to fit up to 38 inches, with seam margin that a tailor can release to about 42 inches.
