What is cut work on a jacquard saree?
On a woven jacquard, extra thread floats across the back between motifs. Cut work is the process of trimming those floats away. Each butti is then separated cleanly from its neighbour and sits slightly raised on the ground rather than being linked by loose strands.
Why is this called a two tone saree?
Two tone means the lengthwise and crosswise threads are in different shades. As the fabric folds and turns, one shade catches the light more than the other, so the peach reads slightly warmer in some folds and cooler in others. The effect is woven in, not printed.
Is the woven pattern printed or part of the fabric?
It is woven in. Jacquard patterning is created on the loom itself, so the butti motifs are structural. They cannot fade, peel or rub away the way a surface print can, and they read on both faces of the cloth rather than only on the front.
How does tusser feel compared with a softer silk?
Tusser has a dry hand and a slightly slubby, textured surface rather than a slippery one. It carries more body, so the pleats stand rather than collapse and the pallu falls with structure. Many people find it easier to pin and manage than a very fluid fabric.
What blouse is supplied with this saree?
A stitched blouse in Weave Rangkat fabric is included with the saree. It is made to fit up to 38 inches and carries margin within the seams, so a tailor can open it out to around 42 inches without recutting the whole piece if you need more room.
