What is crepe silk?
Crepe is a construction rather than a fibre, made from hard-twisted yarn that leaves a finely pebbled, matte surface with a slight spring. In silk it gives a fabric with weight and fluid movement but no shine, so the drape falls close and long.
Why does a matte fabric suit heavy embroidery?
Because the two do not compete. A matte ground absorbs light, so the resham, cord and sequin work supplies all the reflection and reads clearly against it. On a high-shine fabric the embroidery has to fight the surface for attention and often looks less defined.
What are frill details on a saree?
Strips of fabric gathered along one edge and stitched onto the saree, usually along the border or the pallu. The gathering creates a ruffled edge that adds volume and movement to the outline of the drape, so it reads softer and catches the eye as you walk.
Why is the blouse wine rather than mauve?
The saree runs from mauve into wine, and the blouse picks up the deeper of the two shades. Anchoring the outfit in the darker colour gives it structure and keeps the lighter mauve as the visible ground, which reads more considered than matching the pale shade.
